Min. Mushikiwabo meets Defense Attachés to the African Union to discuss the resolution of conflicts in Africa
Musanze, 10 July 2013 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Louise Mushikiwabo, held discussions with Defense Attachés (DA) of countries accredited to the African Union (AU) on “Efforts to resolve conflicts in Africa – the Way Forward”. The group, composed of 27 Attaches is in Rwanda on a one-week workshop and study tour, which started Monday.
The objective of their workshop sessions is to allow participants to gain a common understanding of the management of conflict situations on the continent, their mitigation, conflict resolution and post-conflict peace building. The Attaches will share their experiences on the issue with a view to enhance the ability to contribute to conflict mitigation and resolution.
Speaking to the Press after the discussion, Min. Mushikiwabo stressed that discussions about conflicts in Africa by analysing their causes is the best way to prevent them and ensure sustainable security.
“We talked about conflicts in Africa in general, on the reason why there are conflicts in some countries and why there no solutions for these persisting conflict. Regarding international affairs, we discussed about obstacles leading to the lack of solution to the conflicts and war in Africa. “ she said
About the eastern DRC conflict, Min. Mushikiwabo clarified that there has been sort of hypocrisy in the way the world seeks the solutions to the conflict. “International politics on DRC is unfairly designed. Given some conflicts of interests, it seems that a sustainable solution to E-DRC conflict will never found. However the conflicts were made by people and they should be sorted out by people. In Rwanda’s view, if the international community and DRC would act properly on the issue, there would be no reason for the region to remain unstable”.
This AU Defense Attaches participated in various workshops conducted at the Rwanda Peace Academy training facility in Musanze and a field study tour to different parts of the country.
