Rwanda and Singapore to strengthen cooperation ties
Kigali, 5 July 2013- Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Louise Mushikiwabo received H.E. Yatiman Yusof, High Commissioner of Singapore to Rwanda. They discussed existing bilateral cooperation between the two countries and vowed to strengthen ties.
Minister Mushikiwabo said that Rwanda needs skilled people in service delivery in order to become a knowledge-based economy by 2020 and that cooperation with Singapore in that area is key.
“We have also discussed about other prospective areas of cooperation between our two countries including energy, infrastructure and investment. I have also briefed the Ambassador on some key ongoing projects notably the Kigali International Convention Complex which will be completed next year,” she said.
High Commissioner Yatiman Yusof commended Rwanda’s remarkable economic growth and expressed the will of the Singaporean government to reinforce the bilateral cooperation in line with priorities agreed upon by both parties. He also acknowledged Rwanda’s support to Singapore during the recent International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) elections.
During his three-day visit to Rwanda, High Commissioner Yatiman Yusof also met different officials in Rwandan public institutions and discussed prospective projects. These include the City of Kigali, the Ministry of Education, Rwanda Development Board, Ministry of Youth and ICT, Ministry of East African Community, Ministry of Infrastructure, as well as the Private Sector Federation.
Cooperation between Rwanda and Singapore has focused on public sector capacity building for the last few years. Moreover, different Singapore-based companies have shown interest in working with Rwandan institutions in the areas of infrastructure development, e-Government, vocational training, cultural promotion, tourism, aviation, food and beverage, among others.
In Rwanda, Singapore is represented by the Non-Resident High Commissioner, H.E. Yatiman Yusof since January 2010. Rwanda is represented by High Commissioner, H.E. Jeannine KAMBANDA accredited to the Republic of Singapore since September 2010.
